What Is Tether (USDT)?

Tether is designed to maintain a 1-to-1 peg against the US dollar within the cryptocurrency space. It was originally launched in 2014 as Realcoin by Bitcoin investor Brock Pierce, entrepreneur Reeve Collins, and software developer Craig Sellars.

Initially issued on the Bitcoin protocol via the Omni Layer, USDT has since expanded to multiple blockchains.

What Is USDT (Tether)?

Tether (USDT) is the largest and most widely traded stablecoin in the crypto ecosystem. As of 2026, its circulating supply sits at roughly 183–186 billion USDT, making it the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, behind Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Brief history: The project launched in 2014 as “Realcoin,” founded by Bitcoin investor Brock Pierce, entrepreneur Reeve Collins, and software developer Craig Sellars, before being rebranded as Tether shortly after. It was first issued on the Bitcoin network via the Omni Layer protocol and has since expanded to more than 10 blockchains, including Ethereum (ERC-20), Tron (TRC-20), and Solana (SPL). Today, more than half of the total supply resides on Tron, mainly due to its low transaction fees.

How does it hold its $1 peg? Tether claims every token it issues is backed 1:1 by cash and cash-equivalent reserves, primarily U.S. Treasury bills. The company publishes a reserve report audited by an independent third party every quarter and updates its circulating supply figures daily.

Use cases: USDT has moved well beyond being a simple trading pair on exchanges — in countries with high inflation, such as Turkey, Argentina, and Nigeria, it’s increasingly used as a form of “digital dollar” for savings and remittances.

What Is the Binance Red Packet (Box) System?

The Binance Red Packet is a promotional feature inspired by the traditional Chinese “red envelope” (hongbao) gifting custom. A user shares a set amount of crypto (USDT, BNB, ETH, etc.) as a link or QR code, and anyone who opens that link can claim a share of it directly into their Binance account.
This is an official Binance feature and part of the exchange’s user-growth and marketing strategy, so the mechanism itself is legitimate. That said, the amounts shared are usually very small (fractions of a dollar in USDT, for example), and the person sharing the link may indirectly benefit from new sign-ups.

Security Notice — Please Read
The amount you can claim from these boxes is symbolic; it should not be treated as an income strategy.
When following a red packet link, never enter your wallet’s private key or seed phrase on a third-party site. The genuine Binance red packet flow never asks for this.
Confirm the link genuinely belongs to the app.binance.com domain in your browser’s address bar — fake, visually-cloned “box” sites do exist.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the amount in a box determined?
The user creating the packet sets the total amount and the number of recipients themselves; each claimant’s share depends on those two values.

Do boxes expire?
Yes, most red packets remain valid for anywhere from 24 hours to a few days; any unclaimed balance is returned to the creator once the packet expires.

Can I participate from Turkey?
Yes, for the account types Binance supports in Turkey — but we recommend checking Binance’s official support page for the latest regional restrictions.
